Yoga Butt

Updated: Oct 24, 2021

Yoga, what? Sounds like we are referring to a nice shaped bottom from doing yoga and eating healthy. This is a bit different. So what is it? Yoga butt is describing a tendonitis of the proximal or high hamstring tendons. Overuse or overstretching of the hamstrings cause them to become irritated and inflamed. Stretches like forward folds, Pyramid pose and any other pose that would irritate the hamstrings. What does it feel like? The Hamstrings tendon connects your hamstring muscles to your "sitting bones". Tendons are thick and not very elastic, they can become easily over stressed. You may feel a burning or pulling sensation between the upper thigh and the lower buttock area.

What will help?

Rest the muscles and focus on strengthening with poses like bridge and locust. Notify your Healthcare Provider if symptoms persist or worsen. My experience.... I think every yogi may experience Yoga Butt at some point. Once you feel it, you'll be able to recognize what it is and how much stretch your body can tolerate to adjust your practice. We all love those deep, juicy forward folding postures. Be mindful and safe, enjoy the journey!
